Getting started Guide

Welcome to Databeamer

What Databeamer is, what "zero-knowledge" means for you, and where to go next.

Databeamer is a place to store files, send them to other people, collect documents from clients, and chat with your team. Everything you put in it is encrypted on your own device before it leaves. Databeamer's servers only ever see locked boxes, never what is inside them.

What zero-knowledge means in practice #

  • Only you hold the keys. They are created on your device during setup and never sent to us. We cannot read your files, your messages or your request answers, and neither can anyone who breaks into our servers.
  • You are responsible for your keys. Because we do not have them, we cannot reset them for you. Your recovery phrase and your signed-in devices are the only ways back into your account. Treat them like the keys to a safe.
  • Sharing is explicit. A file is readable by you, and by the people you put it in a group with or send it to. Nobody else, including Databeamer staff.

The main areas #

Area What it is for
Drive Your encrypted file storage, with folders, trash and journals.
Transfers Send files to anyone, including people without an account.
Requests Ask clients or partners for documents or answers through a secure form.
Secure Mail Send encrypted messages with attachments, also to guests.
Chat Direct messages and group chat with your team.
Groups Shared spaces inside an organisation, with their own Drive, chat, transfers and requests.

Security details #

Most of these pages describe what you do and what you see, in plain language. Where a feature relies on encryption or keys, the exact operations are folded into a block like this one:

Security detailsWhat is this?

Blocks like this list the cryptographic operations behind the feature above them: which keys are involved, what is encrypted on your device, what is signed, and what Databeamer's servers can and cannot see. They use the names from the technology page and the glossary.

You can skip them entirely; nothing you need to use Databeamer is in there. They are written for the people who have to check what happens to data before their organisation adopts a tool: security officers, data-protection officers, auditors and IT. Every block uses the same terms, so a reader can search a page for "Security details" and review the whole feature in one pass.

Before you start #

Databeamer runs in the browser at app.databeamer.eu. Use a recent version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. The interface is available in English and Dutch; you can switch under Settings › Appearance › Language.
