# Set up a second device

Add your phone next to your laptop so losing one never locks you out, approved with a code instead of your recovery phrase.

**The situation.** You set up Databeamer on your laptop. You want it on your phone too, and you want a safety net in case the laptop breaks.

**What you will use.** **Device approvals** under [Devices and unlocking](https://databeamer.eu/en/docs/account/devices-and-unlock).

## Why a second device matters

Your keys live on your devices, protected by a PIN each. With two devices, losing one is an inconvenience: the other still unlocks your account. With one device, the only way back is your [recovery phrase](https://databeamer.eu/en/docs/account/recovery-phrase).

## 1. Sign in on the phone

Open [app.databeamer.eu](https://app.databeamer.eu) in the phone's browser and sign in with your usual login. The **Unlock Your Account** screen appears, because the phone has no keys yet.

## 2. Choose approval from another device

Pick **Approve from another device**. The phone shows a short code.

## 3. Approve on the laptop

On the laptop, open **Settings › Security › Device approvals**. The pending request is listed; choose **Approve** and enter the code from the phone. If you ever see a request here that you did not start, choose **Deny** and change your password.

## 4. Choose a PIN for the phone

The phone now has your keys and asks you to **choose a PIN** for itself. It can differ from the laptop's PIN. Afterwards, enable **Passkey unlock** on the phone to use Face ID or a fingerprint instead of typing it.

## Check

Open **Settings › Security › Devices** on either device: both are listed with their type and **Last unlocked** time.

## If you ever lose one

Revoke it from the other device. The steps are in [I lost my phone](https://databeamer.eu/en/docs/account/lost-my-phone).
